On April 28th Jeff and I travelled to UW-Whitewater to watch a theatrical production of To Kill A Mockingbird. The play is, of course, based on the novel by Harper Lee. It's one of our all-time favorites and the inspiration for AJ's first name - Atticus (see Jeff's 9/18/2008 post). We're absolutely thrilled when when people make that connection, as my Aunt Donna did in a letter to us after AJ passed:"... the name you chose for this baby speaks volumes about the kind of people you have become. There is no character in all American literature that represents morality like Atticus Finch. He is the perfect man in so many ways. He is kind, fair and open-minded. When he tells his daughter Scout, 'you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb inside his skin and walk around in it' I knew that this man was everything we all should try to be ..."
We first learned about the play at UW-Whitewater last fall when one of Jeff's cousins brought it to our attention (see my 9/22/2008 post). I ordered tickets back in October and looked forward to attending throughout the winter months. Finally the day had arrived. We made the trek to Whitewater, an easy drive from our home in the Madison area. As the theater director introduced the show, we were surprised to learn that April 28th -- the day of the show -- was Harper Lee's birthday! Bravo! The play was great (the book is by far the best!). I'm also looking forward to reading Harper Lee's biography -- Mockingbird (Aunt Donna was kind enough to send me a copy).
